1st OtaKai Photo Shoot Contest

1st OtaKai Photo Shoot Contest
I've organized a figure photo shoot contest for OtaKai starting last October and the deadline is coming up soon! It's a test to see if this type of contest will click within the community and so far, it has had positive feedback and quite a number of members are going to join.

Me and spade13th (my primary adviser for this) decided to limit the participants based on their activity within the forum and their duration of membership in OtaKai. I guess we're just trying to weed out those who want to actively participate in the community just for the sake of joining the contest.

Anyway, the prizes will be from our favorite store Wasabi Toys and they have been kind enough to give out a Nendoroid Arawn and a Nendoroid Miku Hatsune for the winners!

I'll post the entries here once I've received a digital copy so you, my dear readers, can marvel at my friends' creativity with me~

Winter Anime Lineup 2009-2010

Erm.. I think I'm a bit late in posting this. (Well I've been pretty much late in posting anything lately.)

Here's the anime lineup for the Winter 2009-2010. Not much that interests me except for Dance in the Vampire Bund and Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 3 (which incidentally, I have a figure for pre-order).

Anime Winter 2009/2010
Anything interesting?

OtaKai at Anime Overload Festival 2009

OtaKai at Anime Overload Festival 2009I'm like more than a week late in posting this due to work and all that but here goes!

November 8, 2009 marked the day of the Anime Overload Festival event that we have been preparing for for weeks. Since I am a part of the organizing committee, I met up with the other organizers and the ingress volunteers at 6AM in the SMX Convention Center.

OtaKai at Anime Overload Festival 2009As soon as we arrived, we started setting up the figures since the cabinets that we were to use haven't arrived yet. It was super fun assembling the figures, with the other members mixing and matching the nendoroids while posing the other figures in an ecchi way.

OtaKai at Anime Overload Festival 2009OtaKai at Anime Overload Festival 2009OtaKai at Anime Overload Festival 2009Then at exactly 10AM, people started pouring into the function room. We haven't even finished setting up the displays since the cabinets arrived a tad too late for our liking but people have already begun taking pictures of the figures that have been set up.

OtaKai at Anime Overload Festival 2009The main purpose of our display aside from the actual figures themselves is our "Originals VS. Bootleg" themed cabinet where we showed comparisons of original figures and their bootleg counterparts. Included in the display are the Nendoroid Light Yagami, Saber Holiday Ver., Play Arts Sora and the Fate/Stay Night Trading Figures.

OtaKai at Anime Overload Festival 2009We also gave out 4 kinds of flyers: 2 kinds for the OtaKai overview and the 2 others highlights how to distinguish bootlegs in general. We prepared more than 100 pieces of flyers and we actually ran out of them by the afternoon.

Too bad I wasn't really able to go around the convention as I had to man the booth at practically the whole time. A lot of people came up to us asking mainly about: 1) if we were selling the figures, 2) where to buy figures and 3) information regarding bootleg figures. There was even one guy who came up to one of our members with his Konata figma - asking if it was bootleg lol XD We became a "Figure Information Booth."

OtaKai at Anime Overload Festival 2009For my unexpected impulse buys, I was able to nab a Mushi King plushie though and another plushie who til this day remains anonymous to me. I was also able to buy 2 Mighty Muggs, a General Grievous keychain for the boyfriend and 6 Final Fantasy Creatures figures. The latter was a really good buy since all six only cost me and the boyfriend roughly $40. Yup, for ALL SIX.

It was a fun event, seeing all the people take pictures of our figures, asking us about them and the like. The egress was as fun as the ingress, especially since we packed up the figures together. In response to the AOF display, we had several new members sign up at the forums, introducing themselves as one of the people who approached us during the event.

Anyway, here are some of the pictures of the displays:

Coeli's Macross Saga Part 1: Do You Remember Love?

Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?
I finally gave in to watching the whole Macross series - primarily because my friends from Otakai somehow managed to persuade me into watching it. My boyfriend (who is now officially part of Otakai!) has been egging me for so long to watch it but I guess he still lacks the B.I. (Bad Influence) skills regulars of Otakai are so known for.

As per their advice, I started with the movie, Do You Remember Love? just to get the feel of Macross. Now don't get me wrong. I pretty much know stuff about Macross, having played the game in the old-school NES (aka Family Computer here in the Philippines) and I pretty much know who Lynn Minmay is. I also know the characters of Macross Frontier - Sheryl X Alto FTW! - and since my boyfriend sits right next to me at the office, I am forced to listen to all their songs.

Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?So I watched Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? (Man that title is so long.) I got pretty bored at the first part and I was almost tempted to push the stop button of my media player. I even kept looking at the time to see how long I have to sit down and watch Lynn Minmay sing. Then the amusing parts came: the Zentradi started attacking. What's so amusing about this is how they constantly shouted "Yak! Deculture!" which made me snicker every time they'd say it. If it weren't for that line, I would've stopped watching already. (Up until now, I still don't know if it's Yak or Yack.)

So I met the other characters like Hikaru and Hayase. Oh and Roy Focker and Claudia. Roy Focker's cool. Crude, yet cool. Too bad he died that way. The Meltlandi too - female counterparts of the Zentradi; they're pretty but damn as hell they're big.

Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? What's fascinating about Macross is how they weaved a story of how humans were created. Created, not born. That kept me watching intently. It's pretty reminiscent of Atlantis and Lemuria and all that. The stuff about protoculture and deculture and whatever culture is intriguing and I salute the creators of Macross for getting me interested over something like that!

I do however, find it funny that Lynn Minmay's singing can stop the wars. Sure, she did sing a song that was created thousands of years ago... I still find it funny nonetheless. Oh and I dislike Lynn Minmay. She's irritating and clingy and she's too girly!! Kyuun~ Kyuun~ Kyuun~ XD For the sake of the title of the movie, Do You Remember Love? is a love story between Hikaru, Hayase and Minmay. The aliens and the Valks were added there so that it can be called Macross. At least, that's what I think.

Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?Ohhhh yeah, I forgot an integral part of Macross! VALKYRIES. Well, I'm not interested in them at all. I couldn't even tell each one apart from the other save for the colors. VF-whatever... No way am I going to start collecting them anytime in the near millennium.

Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?I think this post probably didn't really make sense. Buuuuuut~ I'll still continue with my Coeli's Macross Saga Part 2: Macross Frontier as soon as I finish watching it~~ Siao Pai Lon~!

Eien no With - A Story for Dog-Lovers

Eien no WithTitle: Eien no With
Story & Art: Miyauchi Saya
Volumes: 1
Genre: Shoujo

(It's been a long time since I posted a review of a manga, so I'll write about one that I finished reading yesterday and has made cry a bucket-load of tears.)

Having a soft spot for dogs (me owning a very spoiled American Bulldog named Piper and a recently adopted Siberian Husky named Shin), I immediately started to read Eien no With when I saw that it was a heart-warming story about one.

Eien no With focuses on Eye - a dog trained to be a guide for blind people. The story starts when a lonely girl named Hitomi gets motivated to volunteer to semi-train a guide dog for one year. She picks out the runt from the group, seeing that he is like her in so many ways and calls him "Eye."

Eventually, Eye had to leave to undergo training that will ready him for his job. It was heart-wrenching reading about Hitomi's feelings when she had to part with Eye. Although Hitomi found out from her dad that she could see Eye again after he retires from his job - meaning, he could go back home to them again.

10 years later, Eye and Hitomi once again meets as Eye retires from being a guide dog. This is where the story becomes super dramatic *cue tears as large as ping pong balls* and this is the part where I stop telling you about the plot. No spoilers! The story is too good to be spoiled!! ^V^

So anyway, Eien no With is only 3 chapters long, the first one is when Eye and Hitomi meet. The second is when Eye comes home after ten years and the third? The drama :)

Art-wise, Miyauchi switches from two different styles which is obvious as the transition happens from the first chapter to the next. The first style is pretty much old-school shoujo while the second style is contemporary shoujo and personally, I like the latter better.

Story-wise, it's one of the best ones I've ever read. The plot is very realistic - too realistic that I was crying as I read it (my officemate was looking at me funny). I can so relate to Hitomi in terms of her feelings for Eye. (I can't help but wish that I wouldn't have to go through her ordeals with Piper.)

Eien no With is a very, very good story, especially if you have dogs, or any other pet for that matter, that are close to your heart!

Anime Overload Festival

Anime Overload FestivalWhat: Anime Overload Festival 2009
When: November 8, 2009 , 10AM - 8PM
Where: SMX Convention Center
Activities: Video Game Challenge, Anime Karaoke Idol, Battle of the Bands, Cosplay Competition, Music Video Competition, Dance Showdown, Eating Contest, Drawing Contest, Maid Cafe, Manga Cafe

I'm pretty excited about this event. Why? Because Otakai will be having a display booth to promote both Otakai as a figure society and figure collecting in general. Our theme would be kinda like a crusade against bootleg figures as we aim to promote awareness in differentiating between originals and bootlegs. (I'm part of the organizing committee, in charge of the roster of volunteers and promotions.)

I'll post the posters that we'll make as soon as we've completed them ^_^ Oh and I'll also post samples of the t-shirts we're going to have made for this event!

Here's to hoping for a successful display event!

ANICON Postponed!

aniconAniCon has been canceled. For what reason, I don't know. I'm just guessing that the recent slew of typhoons here in the Philippines that caused a lot of destruction have something to do with this.

One of the organizers is a member of Otakai so we got wind of this just a few days ago as he updated the AniCon thread. We just have to wait for the announcements.

ANICON: Anime, Console and Online Gaming Convention

ANICON: Anime, Console and Online Gaming ConventionWhat: ANICON: Anime, Console and Online Gaming Convention
When: October 11, 2009 (Sunday)
Where: Megamall Megatrade Hall 3
Activities: Maid Cafe, Cosplay, Art Contests, Matsuri Area, Anime Toy Displays, Console Games, Game Demos, Online Games among others

ANICON: Anime, Console and Online Gaming Convention as the name suggests is practically about games. I guess there'll be the usual stores that sell their wares every convention here in Manila, and I'm also guessing that there will be very little stuff to buy as I see the goods all the time.

Then there'll be the usual cosplayers who make the area barely walkable and very noisy. Oh and I'm speculating on very large booths that will occupy more than half of the venue. Very large booths on MMORPG who will be giving away installation CDs, posters and stickers when you sign up.

Otakai has been invited to do a display during this convention but no one really took the initiative to start a committee that will organize this. (The reason is mainly because this will be a gaming convention and it was on such short notice -- August! Haha!)

Am I going? If I don't have anything planned, yes. I'll be stuffing my bag with more posters of MMORPG characters that I know nothing of, amass installation CDs of online games that I don't intend to play take pictures of cosplayers who are dressed up as god-knows-who and browse through the shops whose items I already have memorized.

Despite my seemingly reluctant and negative post, I still am looking forward to going to ANICON and hopefully, I can get some hauls!

Fushigi Yuugi on my DS!

Fushigi Yuugi DSSo I was late in finding out that my favorite anime of all time, Fushigi Yuugi (by Yuu Watase), has been made into a game for Nintendo DS. It was released last June 25, 2009 by Idea Factory. Finally! There's an FY game that I can actually play. I missed the first two games on PS2 and since I don't own a PSP, I didn't play the game made for it either.

It's quite awesome that there are two games in one cartridge (or rom *wink*). One focuses on Fushigi Yuugi itself, with Hotohori and Tamahome and I think I'm going to cry again as I saw that scene where Nuriko was dying while watching the promo video. So there's that and the other game has Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden as its plot. To be perfectly honest, Fushigi Yuugi Suzaku still holds the number 1 spot in my heart~ more than any of Yuu Watase's works.

There are two versions to the game - the difference of which is that the limited release includes a drama CD. So the regular version's the one pictured above while the limited looks like this:
Fushigi Yuugi DS LimitedBummer though that it's in Japanese! Why do they make the best anime games in Japanese only?! Can't they (the developers) understand that there are international fans too??

Either way, I'm still going to play it and just hope that someone comes up with a full translation that I can follow lol X3

Here's the trailer:

The regular Fushigi Yuugi and the limited Fushigi Yuugi are on sale now~

Oh and game development companies, please do release your games in English!!

Crows Zero - More than just the fights

crows zeroI recently got hooked to reading Crows and Worst - a manga by Takahashi Hiroshi. It's pretty much about different gangs of students from different schools fighting for the heck of it. Very amusing, to say the least.

So I was searching for more Crows and Worst goodies when I stumbled upon a Crows live action movie entitled Crows Zero.

Crows Zero tells the story of Takiya Genji, a newcomer in Suzuran (aka the "School of Crows"). He tries to conquer and unite Suzuran under one faction (GPS) - a feat no one has done before, no matter how much it was tried.

The movie focuses on how he wins over the different leaders of the school who refuse to follow Serizawa Tamao, a leader of the Serizawa faction who's almost close to conquering Suzuran.

No spoilers here okay? The movie is a delightful watch so I wouldn't want to ruin the fun.

First off, since I'm new to the whole Crows X Worst scene, I'm pretty much confused as to when Crows Zero's plot actually happened. Why the confusion? I'll elaborate and hopefully, someone who's well-versed in Crows X Worst can enlighten me about this.

There are two characters (at least from what I remember) that appear in both Crows and Crows Zero: Rindaman and Bandou.

In Crows, they're both seniors already - at least Bandou is - but then again, it has been said that Rindaman has stayed in school for quite some time.

In Crows Zero, from what I understood, they both are seniors also, unless I understood wrong. Bandou however, is introduced as a top-ranking officer from the group The Front of Armament; he was also introduced in the same light in Crows.

Genji (protagonist, Crows Zero) enters Suzuran in his final year of high school - so that would make both Rindaman and Bandou seniors too, right? Bouya (protagonist, Crows) enters Suzuran in his second year of high school, making Rindaman (not sure about this) and Bandou his seniors.

*And yes, explaining this just confused me more.*

I so love the fight scenes and the sporadic comedy here and there (yay Maki!). Watching through all the fights that they participate in, I was kinda wishing I had my own gang who loved and enjoyed fighting more than anyone else. A gang who thought that fighting isn't just about the violence, the superiority...but it's about fighting for friends, your school and uh... being on top everyone else XD

Crows Zero stars Oguri Shun as Genji and Yamada Takayuki as Serizawa. It's directed by Takahashi Miike and was released last 2007.

It's definitely a must-see for those who just loves endless (and technically meaningless lol) fights. Oh and great-looking bishounen too! Yiiii Izaki!!

A Very Happy Birthday to Me!

Worst mangaSeptember 12 marks the day when I get to be another year older. No birthday hauls yesterday as I had to work lol.

Later today however, there will be a convention - Cosplay Mania 2009 - at SM Megamall. Some toy stores will be there as the owner of Wasabi Toys sent me a text message asking if I'll go. I probably will just for the heck of it...given that I'm already done with work and have had enough rest. (It's already past 3AM as I write this.)

Thanks to everyone who greeted me: family, friends, my extended Otakai family as well as some online acquaintances!

New Berserk Anime?

Apparently, these are leaked photos of another adaptation of Miura Kentaro's Berserk. They supposedly came from an employee of Studio 4°C but I dun really know if these are for real. The next four images show Gutts, Casca, Puck and Zod.

Let me live in District 9!

I guess this post is totally unrelated to anime and the like but I would just like to rave: DISTRICT 9 IS AWESOME!!!

I watched it with the boyfriend last Saturday after the mini EB with the Otakai peeps (where I forgot to bring my cam). We were really excited to watch after seeing the intriguing trailer early last month.

Let me just say that District 9 isn't anything like your normal, everyday, run-of-the-mill alien movie. First of all, the setting is in Johannesburg, South Africa. How atypical is that?? So all the actors are from there or Nigeria - as the plot called for Nigerian gangs. I'm having a bit of a problem recalling our main hero's name which is German/Dutch-sounding. Their English sounded a bit weird too, especially to me who grew up watching American movies. It's okay though, it's not like they aren't comprehensible or anything. (One word that we found very amusing was the "F-word" which sounded a lot like "fok" and they kept repeating it over and over throughout the movie.)

It's also quite hard to believe that District 9 was made with a budget of only $30M. The effects certainly seemed to cost more than that. The baby alien looked so cute too!! (I'm kinda hoping they'd release a figure of it - and hoping harder it wouldn't cost anything like some Leader Class Transformers or something.)

Okay so enough raving about D-9.

In other news, I got myself 3 new SD Gundam Sangokuden. Okay, the boyfriend got it for me. Our house is still undergoing renovation (it's been 3 months already!!) so majority of my toys and figures are at the boyfriend's place. Before I even got to inspect my new hauls, they were whisked off far north.

Samurai make me panic DX

I was in panic last night because one of our local toy stores announced that they already have the Revoltech Sengoku Basara up for pre-order.

revoltech sengoku basara sanada yukimurarevoltech sengoku basara date masamuneI quickly emailed Wasabi Toys asking if they'd have the two Revoltechs and the reply was... YES! So I pretty much have both Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura covered. And yes, I'm actually getting Revoltechs for myself. They will be my first (two) jointed figures -- well technically they aren't as I have those Afro Samurai and Yuu Yuu Hakusho figures that have joints too but their pose-ability are way too limited.

I don't have anything against the other toy store but I've been buying my figures from Wasabi for a few years now so the owner knows me and I get special discounts (also because I'm an active member of Otakai)

Buuuuut. The other toy store has these up for pre-order too:

Fall 2009 Anime Lineup

fall 2009 anime lineup listSo I'm a bit late in posting this, but here we are: Fall 2009 Anime List!

I can see quite a number of what seems to be harem-themed anime there so I'm probably skipping those unless their themes prove to be something worth watching.

I also see sequels like Queen's Blade (I skipped the first season), Natsu no Arashi and White Album.

I'm looking forward to Sangoku Engi (Romance of the Three Kingdoms) and Kimi ni Todoke!! I've been following the manga for a time now and I absolutely love the story! (Hey Snark, this'll be a good addition to your shoujo watchlist!)

On another note, Stitch 2... The girl looks a lot cuter than Lilo. Tamagotchi looks cuter though.

August 20, 2009

August is almost over

kannagi lazy anime
and I just realized that I haven't posted anything since June.

Hooray for the working class with no time for other things besides work.

Anyway, I'm getting a few posts ready (on the recent Metro ComiCon, K-On!, Sengoku Basara...) and I'll upload one each day. For the next couple of days. Until I run out. Or something. It's good to see that there still are some people who visit Poopsies despite its almost two-month-long inactivity.

Which reminds me... I've a lot of catching up to do in terms of blog posts by the different blogs in my blogroll. (That's 3 different uses of "blog.")

I'm excited though about a new anime preview that I saw... So I'll rave about it in another post lol.

Meanwhile, have some delicious K-On!

Summer 2009 Anime Lineup!

Summer 2009 Anime LineupSo here's the updated Summer 2009 Lineup. I don't really find anything interesting to watch - which is a good thing: I can catch up on my backlogs :3

We're in the second month of the Summer so yes, yes, this "update" came a bit too late lol.

As for the movies, we have the following:
1. Summer Wars (Website)
2. Pokemon Diamond and Pearl: Choukoku no Jikuu e
3. Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai (Website)
4. Naruto Shippuuden: Sanbi Shutsugen no Shou
5. AKIRA - Live Action
6. Higanjima
7. Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror (Website)

Okay, so the movies are a whole different matter. Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai is on top of my watch list, of course. I'm kinda interested to see how they were able to pull off an AKIRA live action. Summer Wars, Higanjima and Oblivion Island look equally interesting as well.
