An Akira live-action soon?

akiraCan anyone believe this?

Apparently, Leonardo di Caprio is playing Kaneda in a live-action adaptation of Otomo Katsuhiro's Akira. In case you haven't read the six-volume manga or watched the animated movie yet, Akira's has cyber-punk storyline that set in New Manhattan. One of the main characters, Tetsuo, has psychic powers that build up the story. It's pretty confusing the first time I watched it - oh not to mention violent and grotesque too.

Oh, Tetsuo? He's going to be played by some Joseph Gordon-Levitt. (I have no idea who he is.)

Akira (the movie) will be under Warner Bros. The production will be a collaboration between di Caprio's Appian Way and Mad Chance. (First time I've heard of these.)

So what do you think? Speed Racer's coming out soon (May 2008) and now we hear news of an Akira live-action. Is Hollywood running out of ideas? I mean, I personally don't think this will be any good, judging from past Hollywood-adapted Japanese movies. But we'll see... Although I'm curious as to how Kaneda's bike would look like ^^;

Akira is set to be a summer 2009 movie.

UCC's Eva maids, Akiba's map and moe goodness

ucc evangelion coffeeUCC relaunched their line of Evangelion coffee after taking it off the shelves for 10 years.

The Eva coffee features Rei and Asuka in maid outfits - which is great, right? Yeah, if you frequent pachinko parlors, that is.

This special line of UCC coffee will only be available in Japanese pachinko parlors. The Evangelion coffee will be released by the end of February. (Only a week left, Eva fans!)

Anyway, good news, fellow non-Japanese fans who want to venture forth to Akihabara but does not know that much Japanese yet!

Akihabara Channel has just put up a downloadable and printable (!) map of Akiba...IN ENGLISH! That's right, people. The map is categorized into different sections: cafes, games, doujins, etc. You can get a copy here.

In other news, Bandai just released an "upgraded" version of their bubble wrap toys - you know, those virtual bubble wrap that you can just keep popping. You know what I'm talking about, right?

Ehem... This "upgraded" version, called ∞ Puti Puti Petit Moe, will feature different moe voices from seiyuu Kugimiya Rie. In case you don't know her, she did the voices of Shana, Louise (Zero no Tsukaima) and Al (Fullmetal Alchemist) among others.

bandai ∞ Puti Puti Petit MoeThe thing is, you have to pop 50 bubbles first before you can hear the moe goodness that's inside this small, plastic square. There are four types of moe featured: imouto, tsundere, osananajimi and of course, maid. They each say some lines that cater to their respective "persona." Take a break for 15 seconds and the voices will pester you to continue.

The ∞ Puti Puti Petit Moe will ship on March 8 this year and is limited to 300,000 units only. Bandai has launched a site that features character profiles (see picture above) and wallpapers. Check it out here.

∞ Puti Puti Petit Moe, get?

OMG a walking shark!!

gyo
Title: Gyo
Story & Art: Ito Junji
Volumes: 2
Genre: Horror

The first impression I had with Gyo is that it's more gross than scary. That impression stayed with me until I finished reading it. Gyo comes with a few short stories but the only one worth mentioning is The Enigma of Amigara Fault which is, in my opinion more disturbing than Gyo itself.

Gyo's plot is about a really bad smell - called a death stench - that seems to come from the ocean. The two main characters, whose names I forgot, saw fishes with metallic legs walking around town and they figured out that the stench was coming from those fishes. Oh yeah, they find out that the fishes were already decomposing too.

The two characters get chased by these walking fishes and surprisingly, even a shark and a whale (0.o) start chasing them. All of these sea creatures have the metallic legs that cause them to walk even if they're already dead. So the characters get chased while being enveloped in an awful death stench.

Soon enough, land animals and even humans are infected and the metallic legs do their part in decomposing the bodies and spreading the bad smell. Worse than the smell is the fact that now there are more creatures chasing our main characters (whose names I still can't recall).

I really don't want to give away the actual plot of Gyo, so if you want to find out what happens to our anonymous tandem, the walking fishies and if you want to find out how a walking shark looks like, read Gyo; I won't advice you to expect that much as I would definitely recommend Uzumaki over Gyo as a horror story anytime. Not to mention, the short stories, with the exception of the Amigara story, are quite funny. Well Gyo has it's moments too (check image above).

Well if you ponder on it really well, Gyo actually poses some serious ethical concerns. But yeah, you'll notice it only if you think about it really, really, really well. Or not ^^y

Oh yeah, Tadashi and Kaoru! They're not anonymous anymore!

For the lolicons?

I found these dresses while browsing some fashion sites and well what struck me was that these dresses are absolutely kawaii. Now I'm not really sure whether these are for kids or grown-up women (and men). They're pretty expensive too, with each dress ranging from 18,000-30,000 yen. Honestly, unless I'm a hardcore fan of loli, I wouldn't even dream about buying one of these. Actually, I don't think I even dreamt of wearing one of these, even as a kid.

Yes, I'm boring. Anyway, here are some of the designs~

Oh yeah, the name of the store where I saw this is Baby, The Stars Shine Bright. Even the name is cute X3

Weird and almost disgusting figures

Has anyone seen these trading figures? It's from an anime series called Ike! Inachuu Takkyuubu (Ping Pong Club). I saw these at our local mall and man were they disturbing. Disturbing, yet I want to get them all. Especially the one inside a box as I want to know if the box is made of real cardboard or plastic.

Tokidoki Toys

Okay, these may not be anime-based figures, but I'm guessing that they are, at the very least, Japan-inspired. (It doesn't take a genius to figure that out, actually since Tokidoki itself is Japanese ^^;) These are the figures based from Tokidoki characters. In case you aren't aware of Tokidoki, they've had collaborations with Hello Kitty and LeSportSac. Tokidoki's characters are all cute, as you can see on the picture on your left. The woman on the picture is also a Tokidoki character, but I like them chibi and all SD.

Here are the Tokidoki toys. Some of them are vinyl, the others, I've no idea lol. So kawaii~

The characters above are (L-R) Cactus Pups, Carina, Bruttino, The Moofia, Adios, Ciao Ciao, Sandy, Mozzarella and Sabochan. The Moofia are like trading figures that comes to you in a box with a random Moofia inside. They really aren't cute right? I've never seen them in our local malls, except for the LeSportSac bags (which are really expensive), so I'm guessing there isn't any here.

They are cute, right? X3

Danboard hyper-mode!

If you're not familiar with Danboard, it's a "special" character from Yotsuba&!, a manga by Azuma Kiyohiko (author of Azumanga Daioh). Danboard is a cardboard robot but in actuality, it's a project of Ena and Miura (both characters of Yotsuba&!). Miura's inside the robot but Ena told Yotsuba that it's a real robot. Or something like that.

Anyway, here's a Danboard in hyper-mode. Notice the extensive parts attached to it.
